Since 2010, amateur treasure hunters from around the nation have been scaling mountains and scouring forests in search of Fenn Treasure (an elusive bounty of gold nuggets, jewels and rare antiquities) believed to have been buried by Forrest Fenn (82), an eccentric New Mexico millionaire. He has left a trail of nine hints allegedly leading to his loot in a mysterious poem published in his autobiography (The Thrill of the Chase).
The Fenn Treasure is a treasure reportedly worth over a million dollars supposedly hidden by art dealer and author Forrest Fenn in the Rocky Mountains. Fenn has said he is going to go back and get it when the value is inflated to 10 million dollars. When asked why he created the treasure hunt, Fenn said he "just wanted to give people some hope."
This poem written by Forrest Fenn contains 9 clues of his treasure:
"As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.
Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk.
Put in below the home of Brown.
From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There’ll be no paddle up your creek,
Just heavy loads and water high.
If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.
So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answers I already know,
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.
So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and in the wood
I give you title to the gold."
Although the meaning of the poem is believed to guide someone to the hidden treasure, the book is said to hold ‘subtle clues’ to help one with their quest. Many treasure hunters, who are actively pursuing the ‘title to the gold’, have also purchased Fenn's book.
According to Fenn, many people have claimed to have found the treasure, but no one has provided any evidence to him supporting their claim. As of July 2017, Fenn has stated "The treasure remains where I hid it about 7 years ago". In May 2017, Fenn was asked: "Has anyone determined the nine clues and what they represent?" and his response was: "I don't know that anybody has told me the clues in the right order", leading to speculation all of the clues have been solved, but the chest remains hidden.
To date, four people are known to have died while seeking Forrest Fenn's treasure. Randy Bilyeu disappeared in January of 2016; his body was found six months later. Paris Wallace, a pastor from Grand Junction, also disappeared after telling his family that he was looking for the treasure. His car was found near the Taos Junction Bridge, while his corpse was found a couple of miles downstream. In July of 2017, Eric Ashby's body was found in the Arkansas River. Jeff Murphy, of Batavia, Illinois, was found dead in Yellowstone National Park on June 9, 2017, after falling 500 feet down a rocky chute.
