Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital is located in the hilly region of Gwangju which is one of cities in South Korea and was built in 1950s surrounded by dense forest. In late 1990's, the hospital was officially closed and considered one of the most haunted places for good reason – all manner of paranormal activity is said to take place there. Many rumors claimed the closure of the hospital was due to many patients who died unnaturally. In 2012, CNN Travel selected it as one of "7 freakiest places on the planet."

Another rumor says that the hospital waste management is not good so it is not feasible to be occupied. As the sewage problem grew, the owner left the country and did not leave documentation behind about the land or the buildings on it. Eventually the hospital just closed its doors and it has been abandoned ever since.
Although many reasons are given for this facility’s sudden closure, the most popular story states that for ten years patients and staff were suddenly, and inexplicably dying, found dead in their rooms or at their desks in their offices.
With patients families not given a reasonable explanation as to why their family member had died, people began to talk, and soon the haunted story emerged.
Recently, on March 2018 a found-footage horror movie entitled "Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum" released in South Korea and directed by Jung Bum-shik. The film takes place in the abandoned Gonjiam Psychiatric Hospital in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. However, most of the scenes in the film were filmed in the National Maritime High School in Busan, with the production team adhering closely to the floor plan of the actual hospital to recreate the exact same exterior and hallways.
