In 2017, a strange incident occurred in Malawi, a small country in Southeast Africa. According to the United Nations (UN) report, they withdrew their staffs from the Phalombe and Mulanje districts in South Malawi because of the presence of vampires in that area.
A group of vigilante civilians then kill anyone they deem to be a vampire. At least 9 suspected vampires have been brutally murdered in Malawi since mid-September 2017.

Of the 9 suspected vampires, 2 men from Blantyre City also died. According to the police report, both were stoned, and one was burned.
Doctors and other health care workers have also been targeted by residents. They were accused of wearing a stethoscope that was used to suck blood.

"These medics were also robbed and their vehicles destroyed, while the ambulances taking the patients to the hospital were also attacked," a doctor said.
Dr. Amos Salimanda Nyaka, the community leader said, "The initial incident of this incident may have had elements of Simultaneous Delusional Disorder. This is when the dominant individual is deceived and makes those who follow him believe, and indoctrinate his delusion. Mass delusion can usually occur in a society. "
"This kind of bloodsucker doesn't exist. This is pure history of mass madness," Nyaka wrote.
At that time, local police have arrested more than 140 vigilantes, who accuse people of being vampires and sucking the blood of innocent people.
Florence Rolle, a correspondent for the UN said some UN staff had been withdrawn, while others were still in other districts.
Local people are known to still believe in something related to magic and mystical. In fact, many aid agencies and international NGOs have settled there.
The first deployment of aid agencies, including UN staff, followed a series of violence that erupted in Malawi in 2002.
According to a report by the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS), people in the southern region of Malawi are still influenced by stories of blood-sucking vampires. The vampire rumors seem to have originated in Mozambique.
UNDSS continues to monitor this situation closely to ensure all UN staff are in good health. When the atmosphere and the vampire chaos has subsided, it will send staff back, said Rolle.
