In a baffling turn of events, the ancient Durandal sword, often likened to King Arthur's Excalibur, has vanished from the medieval town of Rocamadour, France. For 1,300 years, this legendary sword, securely embedded in a rock, has captivated visitors and historians alike. Despite being chained to the stone 32 feet above the ground, it is now presumed stolen.

Durandal is famously linked to Roland, the legendary paladin and warrior serving under Charlemagne in the 8th century. The sword is immortalized in the 11th-century epic poem "The Song of Roland," which portrays it as indestructible and imbued with magical powers. The only surviving copy of the sword is preserved in the Bodleian Library at Oxford. The poem recounts how Durandal contained sacred relics, including a tooth of St. Peter, the blood of St. Basil, and the hair of St. Denis.
Renowned for its sharpness and formidable strength, Durandal was said to be capable of slicing through stone with a single strike. According to legend, Charlemagne received the sword from an angel and bestowed it upon Roland, his most esteemed warrior. Facing death at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass, Roland endeavored to destroy the sword to keep it from enemy hands. When his efforts failed, he hurled it into the air, where it became lodged in the cliffs of Rocamadour.
The recent theft has sent shockwaves through Rocamadour. The sword was extracted from a rock face positioned roughly 100 feet above the ground. Mayor Dominique Lenfant expressed the community's collective sorrow, stating, "Durandal has been a part of Rocamadour for centuries, and its loss is deeply felt."
The disappearance of Durandal is a significant blow to the town, where it held a cherished place in local heritage and tourism. Tour guides consistently highlighted its legendary history during visits, underscoring its importance to Rocamadour’s identity.
Local authorities have launched an investigation to uncover how the thief managed the daring heist, scaling the sheer rock face to steal the sword. As the probe unfolds, Rocamadour remains in mourning over the loss of its fabled relic, hoping for the sword’s eventual return.
